With City Hall as a backdrop, a 20-foot-tall inflatable globe
was erected in Los Angeles to generate support for the Global
Warming Solutions Act, AB 32 (Nunez/Pavley). Environment California, the group conducting the global
warming tour, is using the prop to raise attention for the historic global
warming bill during the final four days of the legislative session.
“Global warming is not just a problem for California, it’s an issue that affects the
entire globe,” said Global Warming Advocate Jason Barbose. “The good news is, with AB 32, California is poised to lead the nation in
solving global warming.”
Today’s event at Los Angeles City Hall is part of a statewide tour that
will also include stops in San Francisco, San Diego, the Central Valley and Sacramento. At each stop, Environment
California will be joined by coalition allies and elected officials who are
supporting passage of AB 32.
“We owe it to future generations to combat this pressing
issue,” said AB 32 author Assembly Member Fran Pavley. “By investing in
renewable energy technologies and learning to become more energy efficient, California can be on the forefront in battling
global warming while saving money.”
AB 32 would create the nation’s first statewide cap on global
warming pollution mandating a 25% cut in greenhouse gas pollution by 2020. The
bill has strong support among legislators in both the Senate and Assembly. The
legislative session is scheduled to adjourn on Thursday, August 31st.
“As the world’s 12th largest source of global warming
pollution, California has both the obligation to take
action and the opportunity to be a world leader on this critical issue,” said
Barbose. “Given the inaction at the federal level, the world is watching California on this issue.”
