Cashing in on solar power
Having a solar power system on your home just got better. Now, instead of writing a check to
your utility company, a new Environment California–sponsored law (AB 920) by Assembly
member Jared Huffman (Marin) will require your utility company to pay you.
At the end of the year, your utility company will have to write you a check for any electricity
your solar system generated in surplus of what your home used during that same year. It is called
surplus net metering, and it is one more step toward making California “the Saudia Arabia of
the sun.”
By requiring utilities to pay for surplus solar power, there is now one less barrier for Californians
to go solar. Those who already have solar systems now have an extra incentive to conserve
energy, earning themselves a larger check each year.
