California is the first state to ban single-use plastic bags. When this law goes into effect in July 2015, we’ll take billions of plastic bags out of our environment. That means cleaner rivers and a safer future for sea turtles and other ocean wildlife.

Environment California Applauds Nomination of Gina McCarthy for EPA Administrator

President Obama nominated Gina McCarthy for the next administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, replacing outgoing Administrator Lisa Jackson. McCarthy is currently the assistant administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation at the EPA, and previously held top environmental positions in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Sacramento to draft ordinance that would ban plastic bags

Sacramento is one step closer to protecting ocean wildlife and ocean health. Today, the City Council’s Law and Legislation Committee moved forward to draft an ordinance that would ban single-use plastic bags citywide. This first step puts the ordinance on track for a final vote by the full City Council.

Sacramento Votes today on Plastic Bag Ban | Nathan Weaver

The Sacramento City Council will hold it's first vote on a plastic bag ban ordinance. The city's Law and Legislation Committee meets at 2:00pm, and will decide whether the cities moves forward to clean up one of the worst forms of plastic pollution in our ocean. Come to City Hall at 915 I Street to speak out for the ocean!

At 9:45am, Environment California will host a press conference outside City Hall with two members of the Sacramento City Council, Californians Against Waste, and local environmental activists. Join as as we call on the City Council to ban single-use plastic bags in the shadow of our giant inflatable sea turtle.

Leading LA Mayoral Candidates Endorse Big, Bold Solar Goal

Environment California announced today that Los Angeles mayoral candidates Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel have officially endorsed the goal for Los Angeles to build 1,200 megawatts (MW) of rooftop solar by 2020, which would generate nearly 20 percent of the city's peak summertime electricity needs. Such a goal would make Los Angeles a solar power leader unmatched anywhere in the country.
