Triple It California!What's New
On Sept. 11, 2009, the California legislature passed two companion 33% renewable energy standard bills, AB 64 and SB 14. The measures direct all of California's utility companies to bring more wind and solar to our state. Unfortunately, Governor Schwarzenegger prevented this standard from becoming law through a veto, issuing an executive order to establish the nation's strongest clean energy goal through regulation. Environment California is working to ensure that this important 33% by 2020 mandate becomes law in 2010. Brief Summary America needs a clean energy future and California has historically been the nation’s clean energy leader. After increasing our renewable energy resources to 12% over the past few years, it is high time for California to up our commitment to renewable energy, mandating a 33% by 2020 goal for the entire state. Doing so is not only good for our environment, it is also a key way to rev our economic engines and create green jobs. California has virtually unlimited potential to generate electricity from renewable sources of energy like wind and solar power. In fact, California could be entirely powered by renewable energy given our abundant natural resources. California law already requires utilities to generate at least 20% of their electricity from renewable resources such as wind, solar and geothermal power by 2010 and has the nation's most ambitious small-scale solar rooftop program, the Million Solar Roofs Initiative. It is critical, however, that the legislature pass a 33% by 2020 Renewable Portfolio Standard law to continue to lead the country in the development of clean energy. |
