Solar Survey

17. Given the limits within current law, have you ever been held back from buying a solar system for your home or business because you can’t over-size your system or because you lose surplus electricity at the end of the year to your utility company?

2. In your opinion, should the state set standards for the inclusion of solar power on new housing?

3. Do you favor or oppose requiring solar power systems to be part of California’s building codes, just like earthquake safety and energy efficiency standards are today?

4. If you were buying a home yourself, would you be more interested or less interested in a home with a solar power system so you could provide some of your own electricity?

5. Do you have solar power currently on either your home or business?

If yes, please answer the following questions. If no, please skip forward to question 15.

17. Given the limits within current law, have you ever been held back from buying a solar system for your home or business because you can’t over-size your system or because you lose surplus electricity at the end of the year to your utility company?

If "Other" please elaborate:

7. Do you have a contract with your electric utility for “net metering”, giving you a credit for excess electricity generated during the day that counts against the electricity you consume at night, credited over a 12-month time period?

8. If you answered yes to the question above, do you ever generate surplus electricity at the end of each 12-month time period, receiving no credit or compensation for it?

9. If yes, how much would you estimate you generate in surplus each year? Ideally measured in kWh per year.

10. Do you ever find yourself or your family purposefully “using up” that surplus power or making use of it in ways you might otherwise not do if you were compensated for it?

11. If so, what kinds of things have you found yourself doing to consume all of your surplus solar electricity?

If "other" please elaborate:

12. Regardless of whether or not you generate surplus solar electricity each year, if you were to receive compensation from your utility company for that surplus power, would that change your behavior in any way?

If "other" please elaborate

13. If you answer yes to the above question, how might you use less electricity?

If "other" please elaborate:

14. Do you support the idea of requiring your electric utility to purchase any excess solar electricity generated by your solar system at the end of each year?

If yes or no, please explain why or why not:

If you answered the previous questions, please skip down to the Volunteer Section.

15. Are you interested in buying a solar power system for your home or business in the near future?

16. What is holding you back, if anything, to investing in your own solar power system?

Under current California law, if a home or business generates more electricity with their solar system than they use in a given year, that electricity is given to the utility company without compensation to the owner.

17. Given the limits within current law, have you ever been held back from buying a solar system for your home or business because you can’t over-size your system or because you lose surplus electricity at the end of the year to your utility company?

18. Do you think that California policy makers should change it so that utility companies are required to compensate solar owners for any surplus electricity generated in a given year?

19. What information would be helpful to you in making a decision whether or not to invest in solar power today?

If "other" please elaborate:
