19 Billion Bags

California uses 19 billion plastic bags per year. We think 2010 is the year we start doing something about it. Many of these bags end up in the ocean — and they float around for 400 years. We're calling for a small fee on plastic bags at the grocery store, to encourage reusable bags.

Join the call. Add your name to this letter to Gov. Schwarzenegger, calling for a fee on plastic bags.

Dear Governor,

We need to cut the number of plastic bags that we use as a state - 19 billion per year. I urge you to support a fee on single-use plastic bags in order to encourage people to make use of reusable bags.

With 100 million tons of plastic debris floating off our coast in the Pacific Garbage Patch, it's time we took action to cut our use of plastic.

Sincerely,
