To a sea turtle, a plastic bag floating in the ocean looks a lot like dinner: a jellyfish, to be precise. That's why the plastic bags that find their way into the Pacific pose an often fatal risk to wildlife.

And California uses 19 billion plastic bags per year.

A key committee has approved a bill to ban single-use plastic grocery bags. This one simple step could have a huge impact, but it's going to take a big push to win the votes we need for final passage.

Letter * Dear Legislator, I urge you to support a ban on single-use grocery bags, AB 1998. California uses 19 billion plastic bags per year, and all this plastic not only clogs up our landfills, it's hurting the ocean. Approximately 1,000 miles off our coast is a swirling mass, twice the size of Texas, full of plastic bags and other artificial debris. We need to start cleaning up our act! I urge you to do everything possible to pass a ban on these single-use bags (we can all just get reusable bags!), and support AB 1998. Sincerely,
